Social movements pushing for social change are often met with reactionary counter-movements. Three studies conducted in Malaysia, the US and Australia examined how backlash towards social change is driven by claims about who 'owns' a country. These findings suggest that collective action may in part be a contestation about psychological ownership in a society.
